MPR: What's the meaning behind the name Mindset Evolution?
Rob: Mindset Evolution is years of frustration and trying to accomplish your goals and coming up empty. It's the idea that if you're presented with an obstacle you have to find a way either through it, over it, or around it. You can't do a new thing using the same toolset that got you where you are now if it gets stopped. So Mindset Evolution.
MPR: You guys got your break by winning Uproars battle of the bands..What was your reaction when you first found out that you'd won?
Josh: My reaction was, I was living in about a 900 square foot apartment at the time and the couch was in the way of the hallway, but I was hurdling the couch and running up and down the hallway and hurdling the couch for about 5 or 10 minutes. That was my general reaction.
Brad: I puked.
Skyler: Brad puked cause he was drinking.
Brad: I dunno if that's the reaction you were hoping for but it's what happened.
Rob: I jumped up and down and ran around a lot. Waved my hands in the air and overreacted a lot, it was fun.
MPR: So you guys were pretty excited?
Joey: They tricked me. They knew the night before it was announced and they were like 'hey can you meet us at a bar, we're really nervous, just meet us out.' So I went to the bar and I walk up to the table and everybody stands up and starts clapping. And I'm like uh okay so I'm standing there, I haven't sat down yet so I just joined in with the clap, I'm like ooh yeah whatsup. So then they were like congratulations, we won. And I was like what! So I didn't puke, I just screamed for joy.
Rob: It took a lot of time for it to sink in that we came on top out of 5,300 other bands. Like who does that, do you know a lottery winner? I don't know a lottery winner. You don't know people that do things like this and then to end up being one, it's an incredible thing.
Josh: We knew a lot of the bands that were in it, and just to know that we were even considered among that peer group is ridiculous.
MPR: Has it been weird adjusting to these huge national tours and festivals like Rock on the Range after playing in the Midwest for years?
Joey: I think it took a couple weeks of being on Uproar for us all to get really comfortable with the idea of being on the road together cause we hadn't really done a whole lot of touring prior to it. But after that, this is actually preferred to being at home cause you get restless, we wanna just go.
MPR: You've got your first label released album coming out soon.. it sounds great, how would you describe it to fans that have been waiting for it?
Skyler: Describe it to fans? Man that's tough, I always hate these questions.
MPR: Would you say it's a similar sound to your previous stuff?
Rob: You know I'd say that if our very first independent CD we ever recorded got together and made sweet love to the third independent record we ever recorded, this would be the result. I really feel like this is where we've found our voice. I mean it's rock, it's hard, it's heavy, it's melodic, it's emotional, it's vulnerable, it's aggressive. It's all kinds of elements tied into one. So we're very very happy with it.
Josh: The album is called Brave Bold and Broken and I think there's a lot of lyrical content that relates to the title. There's a lot of meaning in there and I think that when people listen to it they'll know what I'm talking about.
MPR: Where do you get your inspiration from when you're writing?
Brad: Mostly booze.
Josh: Different struggles with like, life, and love and loss, and heartache and achievement. We just take our collective lives and put it on paper and into song.
Rob: I think as a lyricist my inspiration very rarely comes from my personal experience. It very much comes from the people around me and seeing them win and seeing them lose and seeing them not be able to beat themselves. You know if you're tuned in to the people around you, you see like everybody is all kind of on the same level. Some people feel like they have it figured out, but for the most part I think that nobody knows what the hell is going on and we're all doing the best that we can. That's where the music comes from.
MPR: What other artists influence you?
Rob: Dethklok. Pantera, Tool, A Perfect Circle. Anything Maynard James Keenan touches.
Brad: Jay Z, Eminem, Dr. Dre
Rob: Anberlin, The Used
Skyler: Taylor Swift
Rob: Garth Brooks
Joey: Nine Inch Nails
MPR: What are your plans for the rest of the year after the album drops?
Rob: Yeah the goal hopefully is to just go for it and be out for as long as we possibly can. Hopefully we're gonna release the record while we're out. Another one after Brave Bold and Broken we already started writing and we're excited that that's coming together. So we're gonna go out and support Brave Bold and Broken for as long as we can and then just jump right back on this next album and just continue. Hopefully we'll be able to stay out for the next 2 or 3 years and just release music and find the fans that are looking for us.
MPR: If you could have any superpower what would it be?
Brad: I wanna shoot spaghetti out of my eyes.
Skyler: That's a really really loaded question
Josh: What does everyone else say just out of curiosity?
MPR: Yep usually flying.
Josh: I would love to be telekinetic.
Brad: I'd like to know how to spell telekinetic.
Joey: I've always wanted to be batman but unfortunately he doesn't have any superpowers.
Brad: I wish I could play guitar.
Joey: We do too.
Rob: I'd like to have where Forge in the X Men can kinda understand mechanics and just make things come together, you know just understand the pieces of it, I think I'd like that to be my superpower.
