3 Doors Down and Daughtry kicked off their new co-headlining tour at the Red Hat Amphitheater in Raleigh, NC on Wednesday July 3rd. This tour featured openers Halestorm and Bad Seed Rising.
First up were Maryland natives Bad Seed Rising. Want to know something interesting about this band? The ages of the band members range from 10 to 14 years old. Crazy right? They owned the stage and warmed up the crowd from start to finish. That’s one way to spend a summer vacation! I hope they realize how awesome it is for them to be sharing the stage with some of the biggest names in rock. If this tour is coming to a city near you be sure to get there early enough to check out these guys; you won’t be disappointed.
After a quick set change, Halestorm took the stage. First one out was drummer Arejay Hale. He got behind his drums pointing out to the crowd and got them to start clapping their hands as the rest of the band came out and joined him. They started off their set with the anthem “Freak Like Me” and continued to rock the crowd with a flawless set list including “Love Bites (So Do I)”, “It’s Not You”, and “I Get Off.” Lzzy Hale showed off her vocals when they slowed it down a little during “Familiar Taste of Poision” and Arejay rocked the crowd with an entertaining drum solo. They closed out their set with their latest single “I Miss the Misery” and left the stage to cheers from
3 Doors Down were the next ones to hit the stage, each member walking out one by one. Just by watching their energy from the start, you could tell that they were excited to be there. They opened with “Time of My Life” and continued through their set playing hits including “Away From the Sun,” “Loser,” “There’s a Life,” and “Here Without You.” Even with the volume of the amps turned up, you could still hear the voices of the crowd singing the lyrics back to them. During the set, singer Brad Arnold would take some time out and talk to the crowd, apologizing for how long it’s been since they’ve been back to NC and jokingly talking about how much he “hated” the guys from Daughtry. After a number of songs he would take some time out and say thank you to the crowd for all their support, showing that they were truly humble and thankful to be playing there. The audience got a couple treats during their set as well. During “Citizen Soldier” a second drum set was brought out and in the middle of the song, Brad went and sat behind the set and he and drummer Greg Upchurch played back and forth to each other, essentially treating the crowd to a mini drum solo. Another moment stood out during their performance of “Kryptonite.” After the start of the song, Chris Daughtry made his way to the stage and was featured as a guest vocalist much to the surprise and excitement of the crowd. Judging from his and Brad’s interaction on stage, you could tell that they were very close friends. 3 Doors Down closed their set with “When I’m Gone” and dedicated it to all the men and women who serve and have served our country.
A few short minutes later, finally NC-based band Daughtry took the stage. The crowd erupted in cheers as they kicked off their set with “Break the Spell.” Chris Daughtry ran around the stage throughout the song, feeding off the feedback from the crowd. Their set list consisted of songs including “Feels Like Tonight,” “Crawling Back to You,” “Over You,” and “No Surprise.” He took some time and slowed it down with “Life After You,” saying that it had been quite some time since they had played that song live. The band performed a cover of Phil Collin’s “In the Air Tonight” and they brought out Brad Arnold to help out with the song. Again, their interactions on stage showed how close of friends the two bands have become over the years. Chris took some time and talked to the crowd, talking about how great it was to kick off the tour here in NC, which then led into the song “Home,” which was sung right back to them by the crowd. Daughtry finished the night with their first single “It’s Not Over” and thanked everyone for coming out and showing support.
