Among the many highly anticipated album releases this year, Lacuna Coil’s seventh studio album, Broken Crown Halo, brings a new darker definition to Goth metal. Signed by Century Media and produced by Jay Baumgardner, the Italian metal band dedicated their studio time from September to October 2013 to create the new album.
The first track and single, “Nothing Stands in Our Way” immediately hooks you right into the album and features Andrea “Andi” Ferro’s great screams and of course, Cristina Scabbia’s beautiful vocals. “Zombie” complements the first track perfectly by featuring the same lyric themes of not letting anyone bring the band down. Immediately following is “Hostage to the Light” filled with such powerful lyrics and an incredibly catchy chorus sung by Scabbia. The next track, “Victims”, added a little spice to the album with Scabbia’s empowering spoken verse. The fifth track, their second single, “Die & Rise”, was just a taste of what the rest of the album would sound like, preparing to divulge what was really up Lacuna Coil’s sleeve. “I Forgive (But I Won’t Forget You)”, the band’s latest single, included beautifully written lyrics and, of course, a very captivating chorus. “Cybersleep” slowed the album down a bit with its soothing and mellow tones. The beginning of the track was Cristina’s voice auto-tuned, adding to the dark theme of the album. The killer introduction to the next song, “Infection,” continues to entrap the listener into the mesmerizing contents of the music as Ferro’s bone-chilling/death rattle like whisper fills your ears followed by an awesome chorus sung by Ferro. “I Burn in You” sounds somewhat similar to one of their earlier songs, “Our Truth” with an Asian-like intro filled with Scabbia’s powerful vocals. “In The End I Feel Alive” is complete with crushing beats by drummer, Christiano “CriZ” Mozzati, and guitarists, Christiano “Pizza” Migliore and Marco “Maus” Biazzi, complemented with Cristina’s powerful pipes in the chorus. Finally, to end the album on a gothic note, “One Cold Day”, containing the creepy sounds of a music box playing in the beginning and end and of course, Scabbia’s unique vocals echoing in the back of our minds.
Although this is the last album for Mozzati and Migliore, Lacuna Coil certainly poured their blood, sweat and tears into this album. Broken Crown Halo is as dark as their last album, Dark Adrenaline, but a tad bit heavier filled with incredible beats and powerful vocals from Cristina and Andrea. Recently, the band finished their tour with Sick Puppies, Eyes Set to Kill and Cilver as part of Revolver’s Hottest Chicks in Hard Rock Tour, and is currently on their headlining tour with Eve to Adam and Kyng. All in all, this is one hell of an album and whether you are a fan or not, I highly recommend checking it out.
