Anyone who is familiar with New Bern, NC knows that it is a fairly small town, and yes, it has its events, but for the most part it is a pretty low-key town. That, however, did not stop Christian rock band Skillet from making a pit stop at New Bern’s Temple Baptist Church last night on their way to Myrtle Beach’s Beach Festival tonight.
Much to the surprise of all Panheads in Eastern North Carolina, Skillet showed up to Temple Baptist and graced the audience with a killer performance. Most people who I spoke to seemed shocked that the band was going to be in this little town and knew that they couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see such a successful band in such an intimate venue. The event was hosted by BigFish FM 92.7, a local Christian radio station.
Even with the show being in a church, Skillet didn’t hold back on the rock. They brought their contagious energy and it was quickly caught by the audience. From the beginning of their intro to their last moments on stage, people of all ages were screaming and shouting with excitement. The event was seated, but by towards the end of the show everyone had migrated closer to the stage and no one was sitting.
Frontman John Cooper took some time between sets to acknowledge some of the families in the audience that had reached out to them before the show and dedicated songs to them that they loved or that applied to their particular situation. He also incorporated the audience by walking to the edge of the stage during “These Nights” and holding the microphone out to lucky fans that got to sing the lyrics along with the band. The band opened with “Hero” and continued their set with songs including “Sick of It,” “Awake and Alive,” “Not Gonna Die,” “Savior,” “Whispers in the Dark,” “Rise,” “Monster,” and more, leading to their single song encore of “Rebirthing.”
I can’t emphasize enough how much of a treat it was to see a band like Skillet perform in a small town like New Bern, NC. It was one of those situations where fans could really be up close and personal with a band that they love. Skillet delivered an amazing show and if you were around the area and didn’t make it, you definitely missed out. Be sure to check them out the next time they’re in a city near you; it’ll be worth your while.
