Zombies, superheroes, and more were packed inside Tempe’s Marquee Theater like sardines on Friday night for a special Halloween show with Black Veil Brides. Arizona was the first of two shows for the bands “Halloweekend” extravaganza. Falling In Reverse, Set It Off, and The Drama Club warmed up the crowd. By the time it was time for the headliner to take the stage the Marquee was buzzing with excitement.
Parents that likely regretted not bringing earplugs were met with the sound of thousands of screaming teenage girls when the lights dimmed for the final act. Stepping out in awesome costumes, including Moses (aka Christian Coma) on the drums, they wasted no time jumping straight into “Heart of Fire”, the opening track from the new self titled album released just a few days earlier. Just before jumping into another new track, frontman Andy Biersack backtracked, instead opting to play “Coffin” in the spirit of Halloween. The machine gun like double bass drum from Coma raised the energy to a new level, complimented by intense, fast paced solos from guitarists Jinxx and Jake Pitts.
Biersack captivated the crowd with his hauntingly powerful vocals on a number of new tracks. It was pretty easy to tell that fans had already memorized each and every word to the new material,
singing along whole heartedly from start to finish. A chance to rest raw throats came when Coma’s arms became a blur as he delivered an insane drum solo.
There was no doubt that the band could hear the crowd screaming for more when they left the stage, returning to an eager crowd ready for more. Biersack’s voice had a striking resemblance to that of Billy Idol on a cover of “Rebel Yell”. We got “more, more, more” after the impressive cover, closing out the night with “In the End”. Based on the grins plastered across faces trickling out of the Marquee, I think all would agree that there was no one better to spend Halloween night with than Black Veil Brides.
