Jack Antonoff of fun. fame brought his new solo project Bleachers into Boston on Tuesday, for a sold out show at the House of Blues. Since debuting the project last year, Antonoff & Co. have visited Boston twice, first playing at the Boston Calling Music Festival last May, followed by a headline performance at the Paradise Rock Club in the fall.
Tuesday’s show at House of Blues marked another step up for the group as they played to a crowd of over 2,000 of their own fans, many getting their first chance to see the group. With only one album of material to draw from, the setlist was rather short in terms of the amount of songs played, but still impressive in terms of entertainment value. Extended jams and covers filled out the set as Bleachers took a turn covering the Fleetwood Mac classic “Go Your Own Way.” Before ending their main set, they played through an 11 minute version of “Like A Mystery” that included individual introductions and solos for each band member.
The band’s encore included a tease of the song “Bullet” by Antonoff’s first band, Steel Train, a cover of Kanye West’s “Only One”, and the Bleachers songs “Who I Want You to Love” and a rousing performance of their hit “I Wanna Get Better” which was capped with a blast of confetti. Over the course of the night Antonoff got the crowd going crazy several times with his seemingly endless energy level and positivity. Antonoff is a performer who knows how to work a room, between the on stage vibe, and the incredible performances of each song giving the songs new life in a live setting, Bleachers put on what had to be one of the best performances of the year so far for many in attendance.
