Wolf Alice are a four piece rock band from North London formed in 2010, but a quick listen to a song like “Moaning Lisa Smile” and you’d swear they were straight out of the 90’s Seattle grunge scene. The group has released two EP’s and will release their debut LP, early this summer.
They made their way to Great Scott in Allston, MA last Tuesday where they delivered a loud, powerful, captivating performance. Not all of Wolf Alice’s material is the loud, power chord infused grunge sound of the 90’s, the band also can rock out intricate, slow indie tunes as well. Vocalist/guitarist Ellie Rowsell has the stage presence and talent to become a major personality in the rock scene in the near future. Her voice and guitar playing combined to produce a sound that is so wonderfully retro and modern at the same time. At a time in music where many bands are trying to emulate the 90’s alternative sound that dominated airwaves years ago, Wolf Alice brings elements of it into their music, while still creating something fresh.
Their setlist consisted of both songs they’ve released on their EP’s so far like “90 Mile Beach,” “Blush,” and the rocking tune “Moaning Lisa Smile” and songs from their soon to be released debut album such as “Your Love’s Whore” and “You’re A Germ.”
