One of the summer’s hottest tours is the late 90’s/mid 00’s revival co-headliner featuring alt rock giants Third Eye Blind and recently reformed emo icons Dashboard Confessional. Recently the tour made a stop in Boston, MA at a sold out Blue Hills Bank Pavilion. Though the tour was sure to bring a lot of fond nostalgia to many, both band’s performances proved they weren’t just reliving their former glories and both had a lot to offer currently.
Dashboard Confessional took the stage early, at 7:40pm, met with fans shouting the opening lines of their classic “Screaming Infidelities” back at Chris Carrabba in perfect harmony. Carrabba & Co. ripped through a lengthy set of the bands’ many hits including “The Swiss Army Romance,” “Stolen,” and “Vindicated.” Chris Carrabba also took some time to introduce Dashboard fans to the music of Twin Forks, his project he’s been performing with during Dashboard’s time off. Dashboard finished their set off with the fan favorite “Hands Down” to which nearly the entire venue seemed to know the lyrics to.
Third Eye Blind went on in the late slot with frontman Stephan Jenkins singing from a platform at the back of the stage for the first two songs. Jenkins emerged like a boxer entering the ring for the third song, “Wounded” and took his rightful place at the center of the stage. Jenkins is a rockstar in the truest sense of the word, working the crowd and stage with just a hint of that smug rockstar attitude that is so often missing in today’s scene. Although the classics like “Jumper” and “Semi-Charmed Life” drew the loudest audience reactions. It was new material from the bands 2015 album “Dopamine” that showed the band is aging like a fine wine.
Between the two bands there was plenty of nostalgia going around, but unlike many acts both Dashboard and Third Eye Blind are bands that are by no means passed their primes, proved not only by their performances, but also their ability to sell out a 5,000 capacity amphitheater.
