Electronic indie rockers Awolnation recently swung by the House of Blues in Boston, MA in the midst of their Run Tour; delivering a high energy genre-blending set. A quick trip to the local record store would often have you looking in the “Electronic Music” section to find Awolnation’s releases, but pinning them down to one genre is a lot harder than that. At times the band’s set felt more like a punk rock show than anything else.
Vocalist/mastermind Aaron Bruno commanded like crowd like a seasoned vet throughout the entire show, getting them revved time and time again. The single “Hollow Moon (Bad Wolf)” was an early standout in the setlist as the fans emphatically screamed the words, including the ever so catchy line “Motherfucker I’ll be back from the dead soon.” It was during the track “KOOKSEVERYWHERE!!!” that the energy in the room hit a fever pitch, the track which could be described as “electronic punk rock” had the crowd moving. Seasoned drummer Isaac Carpenter took his turn in the spotlight with a rousing drum solo before the band closed the primary portion of their set out.
The group returned to the stage to overpowering chants of “AWOLNATION!” and launched into their latest single “I Am” giving the crowd what they wanted. The show ended – as predicted – with the group’s signature song “Sail” much to the joy of the crowd. The setlist was balanced equally between the bands two albums Megalithic Symphony and Run.
One aspect of Awolnation’s show that deserves a review all its own, is their light show. Throughout the entire night, the stage lighting was as dynamic as the sounds of the band providing a show that was as good for the eyes as it was for the ears. Each song had it’s own multi-layered visual aspect bringing each individual one to life right in front of the fans’ eyes. If you get a chance to catch Awolnation on their current tour make sure you keep your eyes focused on the stage to get the most powerful concert experience.
