Los Angeles by way of New Zealand rock singer Gin Wigmore is currently in the midst of her largest North American headline tour to date. Touring in support of her 2015 release “Blood to Bone” Wigmore and her band played a sold out show at Brighton Music Hall in Boston, MA on Saturday night.
Taking to the stage shortly after 8pm, Wigmore kicked off her set with “Willing to Die” the latest single from her third and most recent album. Soon after she would revisit her second album “Gravel & Wine” by playing the song “Kill of the Night.” As much as the crowd was enjoying the show, Wigmore herself seemed to be the happiest person in the room. It was near impossible to spot a moment that she wasn’t smiling while onstage.
Rolling through her setlist Wigmore split time between her last two albums, ultimately playing 7 songs off each. The only song Wigmore played from her debut album was “One Last Look” which came as the second to last song of the main set. The show as a whole took on the feel of a classic bluesy, rock n roll show with hip swinging sounds making the small Boston venue feel like a late 70’s blues club. Wigmore’s band was tight as can be, not your typical backing band hiding the shadows. With a twin guitar attack – turned into three guitars on occasion when Wigmore picked her’s up – the band was in fine form. The stage presence of both her and her band added to the atmosphere of the house rockin’ show.
For her three song encore Gin Wigmore decided on playing “Man Like That” - which was performed with Boston local pop trio The Doped Up Dollies assisting – followed by “Sweet Hell” and finishing the night off with “I Will Love You” a beautiful blues-rooted ballad that served as a perfect cap to the set. All in all the night was a fun one, filled with music that made everyone in the room want to dance. Wigmore’s voice has that signature rasp to it that makes you feel like you’re in a smoke filled bar room where whiskey is the most popular order. If you’re looking to catch a tour that will give you a taste of a true rock & roll show look no further than Gin Wigmore’s Willing to Die Tour.
