Oregon heavy metal outfit Red Fang made their way to Cambridge, MA on Sunday night, where they played to a sold out crowd at The Sinclair. The group are currently on tour in support of their fourth full length studio album, “Only Ghosts” released in October. However it was their 2011 album “Murder the Moutains” that would provide the most songs in the setlist on Sunday.
Opening with popular track “Wires” Red Fang started their night slowly, with a short jam introduction and began to power on much like powerful locomotive. By the sixth song of the set they were all full power, playing the ultra-heavy “Blood Like Cream” as die-hard Red Fang fans shouted the chorus of “cut it up! Cut it up!” back at the band. Following that, they launched into some new material with three out of the next four songs coming off of “Only Ghots” including the slow, psychedelic anthem “The Smell of the Sound” – a stong stoner rock flavored song with a powerful chorus and mesmerizing instrumentals. With the new material out of the way, Red Fang would go back as far as their debut album, playing the track “Sharks” followed closely by fan favorite track “Hank Is Dead” which drew a jubilant reaction from the audience. The night was capped off during the encore with Red Fang’s signature song “Prehistoric Dog” the song that most casual metalheads are familiar with.
Throughout the set Red Fang demonstrated their hard rock, no frills stage presence that has been a big contributor to them building the strong fan base they currently have. Four consistent, hard rocking albums have also made them one of more popular groups in their genre. With the forthcoming string of sold out shows they have, it’s evident that their consistency is bringing growth to their music and even their brand. A quick glace at Red Fang’s merch table revealed all kinds of items for sale, up to and including their own signature hot sauce. Red Fang have only been making albums for less than ten years now, but they seem to have hit their stride and appear to be in their prime right here and now.
