With yet another Nor'easter on the way in, folks in the Boston/Cambridge area of Massachusetts should probably plan on staying in for the next few nights. But, by Thursday night if you're ready to get out of your snowbound residencies, The Sinclair in Cambridge, MA has the perfect gig for you.
Meet SSION (pronounced SHUN - like passion, transgression, omission)
Fronted by Cody Critcheloe, SSION is a multi-faceted art project. The music is defined as pop but has much more to it. Elements of pscyh rock and punk backed with dance beats. Critcheloe directs all his own videos, while also having directed popular music videos for artists such as Grizzly Bear, Robyn, Perfume Genius, Santigold, Kylie Minogue and more. Another element of SSION is art, Critcheloe designed the first Yeah Yeahs Yeahs album cover.
Critcheloe considers SSION to be much more than a band, in a recent interview with Noisey he said: "SSION is not really a band, it’s more of my on-going pop project. I started it when I was in high school, in Kentucky, and then it sort of mutated throughout the years and right now I’m really the only remaining person. It’s spelled that way because, well, it was a joke—you know words like mission or passion or transgression. I was actually looking at a Mission of Burma record, and I thought, “Oh, I should just call the band SSION.” I thought it was really funny, like, if you shun something…I was like 16, so it was really clever to me. But I actually still like the way it looks! I like that no one knows how to pronounce it."
SSION's most recent musical release is the single "Comeback" which is off his upcoming album, O due out this spring. You can watch the elaborate short film/music video that Critcheloe directed himself below.
