Look out Louisville, one of the loudest music festivals of the year is coming to the Highland Festival grounds at the KY Expo Center. The last weekend of September Danny Wimmer Presents Louder than Life has 3 jam-packed days of some of the best names in heavy music.
Starting Friday, September 27th, the afternoon starts with smaller bands, some of the names may not be as well known as the headliners but they aren’t exactly small either. Wilson is bringing their global fuckery to town, alternative metal/hard rockers New Year’s Day who has been in the game 14 years now are also playing. GWAR is also going to cover the field in fake blood (presumably anyway), as well as former Pantera frontman Phil Anselmo and the illegals will be playing, but less likely covering the field with fake blood. Blues metallers All Them Witches also make an appearance on Friday, think Kings of Leon meets Black Sabbath. The Crystal Method will also play a fantastic DJ set, and those aren’t even the headliners.
Headlining Friday night are the mighty Slipknot, their 6th studio/newest release We Are Not Your Kind was released August 9th. For those who like pop-punk but also have a craving to mosh during breakdowns, Florida’s A Day to Remember are also playing. They always seem to be evolving and are sure to make Friday a fun and memorable kickoff to this festival. Western Massachusetts Staind is also making a rare appearance this year which could be the start of more full band shows. Chicago’s Brother trio Chevelle is also going to rock Kentucky, along with a few others! Did I mention that’s only the first day?
On Saturday, the slightly punkier day with bands like The Dropkick Murphys, Anti-Flag, and Suicidal Tendencies will be playing. That’s just the tip of the iceberg, the Pacific Northwest-based Buzz Osborne led sludge metal greats Melvins are playing as well as the LA power-pop/punk band Red Kross (who share a bass player, Steven McDonald). To shift gears slightly, the infamous party rocker Andrew WK, Badflower, Parlor Mob and more will be gracing the stages with their presence.
As far as headliners go? Saturday couldn’t be any more stacked than it already is, Stone Temple Pilots with their new frontman Jeff Gutt (I’ve seen them, he’s good) will be playing. PA rockers Halestorm will also be there, led by frontwoman Lzzy Hale. Ice Cube will also be there, then Godsmack will be bringing their show to Louisville. Last but not least Axl Rose, Slash and crew with Guns N’ Roses will be headlining the middle day.
You better still be standing by Sunday because the rock isn’t over yet, Sick Puppies want your attention. As do hip hop/punk rockers Ho99o9 (pronounced Horror) and I know they’ll certainly earn the attention. Christian metal mainstays Demon Hunter will also be playing and will also grab your attention fairly easily. Those are a few of the smaller support acts to another big day of headliners like Disturbed, Rob Zombie, Marilyn Manson, Breaking Benjamin, In this Moment, Sum 41 and Three Days Grace.
If the music wasn’t enough for you, there are bars and exhibits to keep you occupied in between acts or if you need a break from the mosh pits. The Boilermaker bar will be featuring Metallica’s blackened whiskey and Enter Night pilsner, in addition to the other bars that will be on-site (beyond bourbon, craft beer, Heavy Tiki, and Jack Daniel’s No. 7, to name a few) there will also be monster energy experience if alcohol is not your thing. There is also an interactive exhibit called The music experience with gear and instruments used by the pros that you can play. Bands may also make appearances there throughout the weekend. Take me Home, a non-profit volunteer organization whose goal is to find homes for homeless animals will have a booth as well.
