Outside the Pit is a recurring installment for Mosh Pit Report that focuses on the music we at Mosh Pit Report listen to when we're in the mood for something musically different than our usual choices. We encourage our readers to check out all the artists we cover and expand outside some of their typical musical comfort zones.
Brooklyn based pop singer VÉRITÉ played Brighton Music Hall in Boston, MA on Thursday night, VÉRITÉ – who’s real name is Kelsey Byrne - released her highly anticipated debut album “Somewhere in Between” earlier this summer via Kobalt Music Recordings. The album includes collaborations with producers Liam Howe (Lana del Rey, Ellie Goulding, fka twigs), Tim Anderson (twenty one pilots, Solange, Mr. Little Jeans), Peter Thomas (Selena Gomez, Betty Who), James Flannigan and Zach Nicita. Prior to her debut LP, the singer’s back-to-back acclaimed EPs (Living, Sentiment, Echo) garnered multiple Hype Machine #1 hits as well as a sold-out intimate headline North American tour.
Now with new LP release, VÉRITÉ is back on the road on a larger headline tour with even more material to play. The tour – which began in Philadelphia on Wednesday nigh - has already seen the live debut of several songs, including “Need Nothing,”“Better,” and the album’s title track “Somewhere In Between,” all of which were played on Thursday night in Boston as well. VÉRITÉ took the stage in sexy, but understated attire, wearing a black overcoat over her appealing stage outfit, making the focus of the show more on her music than her appearance. In an era where a lot of pop artists stay true to the adage “sex sells” it stood out as an independent, against the grain decision.
With talent like her's the music itself has no trouble standing on its own; VÉRITÉ’s smooth, soothing vocals were a pleasure to listen to as she performed her way through a 15 song set. VÉRITÉ was moving all about the stage for most of her set, alternating between her keyboard and center stage throughout the night, coming to the edge a few times to interact with the excited fans in the front row. The only non-original song VÉRITÉ played was a cover of The 1975’s “Somebody Elese.” VÉRITÉ’s version of the song was recorded for a studio version earlier this year and is responsible for her significant attention on Spotify where she has racked up over 100+ million streams in total.
The shows lighting was dark and ambient, creating an atmosphere that was relaxed and left fans well suited to stand back and enjoy the show. VÉRITÉ’s vocals were accompanied by not only her keyboard, but the electronic beat stylings of her two man backing band. Her set was capped off with the song “Underdressed” a sexy, slow almost ballad that best put on display her multi-dimensional vocal range.
VÉRITÉ elected to end her set there, forgoing the played out faux encore break that has become expected at nearly every show nowadays. She addressed her fans before leaving the stage, thanking them for standing by her, buying her album and coming to her show. The ceiling is high for VÉRITÉ, her vocal talents and emotional as well as relatable lyrics are big contributors to her growing potential as a pop star. If you have a chance to catch VÉRITÉ now, on her way up, I would strongly advise taking it before getting tickets to her shows becomes nearly impossible.
